More and more brands are releasing EVs each year, so drivers find driving eclectic to be more accessible than ever. If you are interested in joining in on the electric benefits but wary of all the unknown elements, put your worries to rest. We are here to cover the basics of EV charging to give you confidence in choosing an EV for your next new ride.

How To Charge Your EV and Terms to Know

  • kW: The power used to charge your EV battery. kWh: Your battery’s stored energy.
  • V2L: This means Vehicle-to-Load. It is a power outlet inside of your vehicle. You can not plug in household items, from toasters to something more practical like a laptop charger. Check to see if your desired model has this feature.
  • MPGe: This stands for miles per gallon equivalent, which is how fuel efficiency for EVs is measured.
  • Regenerative Braking: This amazing technology has contributed greatly to the boom of hybrid vehicles. It essentially captures energy from your vehicle’s natural braking cycle to power your electric battery. So, your vehicle can generate some of its own energy.
  • Level 1 Charger: This method of EV charging is the most accessible. However, it produces the lowest amount of charge per hour at a whopping 3-5 miles of driving range per hour. At 120 volts, you need only to use your portable plug with a common household outlet, much like you would use for a lamp, TV, or vacuum.
  • Level 2 Charger: This is one of the most common methods of charging. You can typically achieve a full battery of charge overnight. You can also use this charge method at home if you have access to a 240-volt outlet. Those are commonly used for large appliances like a dryer or refrigerator. You can also find these chargers at public charging stations around town.
  • Level 3 Charger/ Direct-Current (DC) Fast Charging:This method of charging is the absolute fastest. You can achieve a full charge in as little as 30 minutes to an hour. Find these chargers at shopping centers, rest stops, and along major highways. If you are going far, this is the way to go.
